Stretching
Advertising Dollars
Since the cost of advertising is steadily increasing you
should learn how to utilize your space and dollars wisely.
Here are a few tips to stretching your advertising budget:
- Leftover space. You may purchase remnant space
or airtime last minute that can't be filled which can save
you 30-80 percent, however you can't be picky with your
spot or position.
- Classified Ads. Classified listings aren't only
for job openings. They're much cheaper. Many papers also
run mini display ads in the classifieds.
- Regional Buys. Some papers and publications have
regional editions that have ad costs that are a fraction
of the cost of the regular edition. You also reach a more
specific area, rather than a much larger audience than your
business serves.
- Ad Discounts. Many publications offer discounts
for advertising several times in one publication, but don't
be caught in a long-term contract. Test the publication
with a short contract.
- Stick With It. Repetition is key. Run the same
ad again or in other publications. It saves money on ad
creation as well. Use your ad for other things like flyers
or direct mail pieces, your ad dollars will go a lot further.
- Co-op. For some retailers, you might be able to
take advantage of co-op advertising funds offered by vendors.
They will reimburse for a part of the ad if you mention
the vendor.
- Barter. Try to barter or trade ads for products
and services. Barter ads are often used by restaurants or
entertainment businesses like theaters.
